A Virtuous Woman

CAPTAIN Harry Hunt, captain of a coastal transport, was married to the beautiful Janie Scadden in the summer of 1863. Then the wedding party all boarded his boat in New York harbor for a celebratory cruise. They had hardly left port when Hunt’s vessel was hailed and halted by Union authorities. Hunt and his ship were needed immediately to haul a shipment of corn from North Carolina to New York. Wedding party and all, the vessel set its course for southern coastal waters.

While the ship was being loaded, Confederate troops stormed in and captured the ship, its cargo and all aboard. Seeing that the wedding party were noncombatants, Southern officers released all on board, including the new Mrs. Hunt. Only her husband would be taken prisoner. But young Janie had not married Harry just to lose him, and she refused to leave him. Unbelievably, both were eventually sent to the infamous Andersonville Prison where the ground was all mud and goo and human filth lay everywhere. Over 12,000 men would die from the inhumane conditions.

Captain and Mrs. Hunt and a chest of their belongings, including $5,000 in cash, took up housekeeping in a meager tent within the gruesome prison. But some people in prison belong in prison and one night the back of their tent was slit and their chest and its contents were spirited away.

Now, this incredible woman, alone among an ocean of destitute and desperate men, had to make due with what little that remained.

Thirteen months after their capture, Mrs. Hunt gave birth to a baby boy amidst the squalor that was Andersonville.

One day, a passing Confederate doctor was surprised to hear the cry of a baby in the midst of such an awful place. He stopped and talked with Mrs. Hunt and heard her story. Greatly moved by the resolute character of this stately lady, he managed to have her and her baby removed from the prison and boarded at a nearby farm. He then procured material so the mother and child could have clean, decent clothes. Next, he arranged to have Captain Hunt paroled to work in the prison hospital so he could be with his wife.

The unbending courage and resolve of this brave lady resulted in hardship for herself, but ultimately wrought freedom for her and her whole family. Virtue!
